Papua New Guinea is located in the tropics just south of the equator and is the second largest island in the world, with some 600 outer islands, atolls and coral reefs.  Papua New Guinea is renowned for it's spectacular surfing and diving in crystal clear waters with amazing pristine reefs. PNG waters are abound with great surf breaks and dive spots scattered with WWII artifacts, marine life and sunken volcanoes. Add all this together with friendly native locals with their colourful markets, wood carvings and handycrafts, great food and tropical climate it will  certainly make for an unforgettable stay but still this is only just part of what you will experience. This culturally and geographically diverse country has loads of opportunity for adventure travellers, is stunningly beautiful and will continuely offer up surprises to those that visit.

Papua New Guinea offers some amazing surf locations throughout its mainland and off-shore islands and it is still a chance that when exploring the region you may come across a break that has yet to be surfed!  Whether you access the surf by boat or when staying at a land camp the surf in Papua New Guinea is a must do for ever surfer looking for an adventure. Often referred to as one of the last frontiers of surf discovery on the planet, a trip to this place will not disappoint even the most hardened traveller.

The region of Papua New Guinea that is currently exposed to most of the surfing population thus far is in the far North East of Papua New Guinea mainland around Vanimo and the North East islands, off New Ireland and New Hanover.  The New Ireland area has been set up specifically for the comfort of surfers and their families making your stay that little bit more enjoyable.  You can access the region by flying to Kavieng from Port Moresby and then with a short transfer on to your final destination to access one of the surf camps or charter boats. 

PNG is a surf rich country during the surf season but  you need to get out there to discover and enjoy it. The New Ireland region directly around Kavieng has seven or so reef breaks, traveling down the New Ireland's east and central coasts you also have an abundance of rarely surfed breaks, whilst the outer islands off New Ireland offer the same qulaity waves and variety of breaks. as any surf destination worldwide, which means consistently good surfing conditions.  The St Matthias group of islands, Manus Island, New Hanover and the inner islands around the New Britain Province are still raw and full of discoveries waiting to happen.Surfers have access to a variety of rights and lefts that are generally in the vacinity of 3'-5' but occasionally peak at around the 6' mark which can at times test your abilities.  The northerly swell season runs from around October to May producing some world-class breaks that can be surfed on any tide.  The surf is generally not as powerful as other regions in the world but you can certainly get sizeable, challenging and even shallow breaking waves depending on your choice of reef break. The Vanimo and Madang region's on the mainland also have a variety of good quality surf breaks that have a mixture of reef, point and beach breaks.
