The main islands of Halmahera, Moluccas and Irian Jaya or West Papua as it is also known is where you will be mainly travelling around to access those secret surf breaks and of course the ones that are begging to be discovered. The region is home to many isolated islands only accessible by boat and is literally covered with 100's of tiny reefs and atolls. The area is screaming for adventurous wave hunters to come and explore.

This is a place with a difference to your typical Indonesian surfing destination. A genuine frontier as far as surfing goes. Flying into Sorong on the north west tip of Irian Jaya is where you need to go for the start of your journey.  Upon landing you will notice it is not like your a typical hoilday destination, with a population of around 125,000 people, Sorong  is one of your more remote places in Indonesia to be picked up for a surfing surfari.

The Moluccas area receives the same swells that rise from the South China Sea which also hit Papua New Guniea's north coast and its surrounding islands. These same swells also hit the east coast of Samar Island in the Phillipines which is located to the NW. With the Moluccas region more open to these swells and with a greater diversity of breaks, it is also more prone to larger sized waves than its neighbours.

Best surf season is Nov-Apr  during the rainy season. Tropical typhoons are not uncommon through-out the region making the prospect of bigger swells possible. With a limited ability to access surf and a smaller window of opportunity to surf this region due only having 4 months to the season, you won't want to take to long to book to this region or you will literally "miss the boat".

Whether it be long cruisey type waves, short hollow waves with plenty of power, or hot dog style waves, it is all here. The area is new to the modern surf traveller, with plenty of undiscovered and un-named breaks to be found and named.
